NSW: Loving husband jailed for killing mother in law
A man who loved his wife and son was jailed for at least three-and-a-half years today
for killing his mother-in-law who had tried to break up his marriage.
SON THAI TRAN, 37, has been found guilty of manslaughter for the killing of 60-year-old
SANH THI NGUYEN at the Yagoona home of his estranged wife in south-western Sydney on April
21 last year.
Sentencing TRAN in the New South Wales Supreme Court, Justice VIRGINIA BELL said substantial
leniency should be shown because of the pressures he had been under leading up to the
killing.
Justice BELL said on the night Mrs NGUYEN was killed TRAN had gone to his wife's
house with the intention of talking to her before he either went back to Melbourne to
live with his family or kill himself.
Justice BELL said she accepted that Mrs NGUYEN attacked TRAN first with the scissor
blade she was eventually stabbed with 25 times.
TRAN pleaded not guilty to murder but was found guilty of manslaughter on the
grounds of diminished responsibility.
TRAN will be eligible for parole on October 22, 2001.
