Fed: NSW calls for national ban on fertiliser

New South Wales Premier BOB CARR has called for a national ban on the fertiliser ammonium
nitrate, which can be used to make bombs.

Mr CARR says the ban on the fertiliser used by farmers and market gardeners should
be instituted once an appropriate alternative is found.

The federal government has previously said the states should develop their own regulations
on ammonium nitrate.

However Mr CARR says this means people could simply slip over the border to other states
where restrictions are not as tight.

He says it's going to require the commonwealth to determine that there is alternative
fertiliser available for market gardeners and farmers.
