Fed: Sydney and Melbourne prime suburbs home to top earners
New Australian Taxation Office statistics show Sydney and Melbourne's prime suburbs
are home to the nation's top income earners.
But New South Wales is also home to Australia's lowest income area, of Callaghan and
around Newcastle University.
The statistics show Sydney's prime suburbs of Darling Point, Edgecliff, Rushcutters
Bay and Point Piper are home to Australia's top earners.
Those suburbs contain more than 4,800 people with a mean taxable income of $128,700 a year.
Melbourne's exclusive Toorak and Heyington came in a close second, with 8,000 taxpayers
on a mean income of $111,000 a year.
Callaghan and around Newcastle University came in as Australia's lowest-income suburbs.
These were closely followed by the remote South Australian west-coast towns of Poochera
and Pygery, and Leyburn in Queensland's Darling Downs.
All three areas recorded mean incomes of between $21,000 and $22,000.
