-Vodafone CEO calls for regulatory compliance of Internet firms

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2011 M2 COMMUNICATIONS

6 June 2011 -- Internet companies should comply with the national laws that telecoms firms follow, according to Vodafone's (LON:VOD) chief executive, Vittorio Colao, the Financial Times reports.
In an article in today's newspaper, Colao argues that Internet companies should also be subject to regulations such as those regarding consumer and data protection and, like telecoms operators, should bear the related compliance costs.

Colao's comments are contrary to calls by US online giants like Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Facebook, which have warned against tough policing of the web.

Telecoms operators, including Vodafone, Telefonica (MCE:TEF) and France Telecom (EPA:FTE), are currently pushing for the right to impose fees on Internet companies for delivering their bandwidth- demanding content. The operators hope that a summit held by Neelie Kroes, the commissioner in charge of the European Union's digital agenda, next month will not promote a net neutrality regime that could stop them from levying such fees.

NSW:NSW taxpayers lost $188m on BER: audit

NSW:NSW taxpayers lost $188m on BER: audit

By Adam Bennett

SYDNEY, Dec 7 AAP - Taxpayers may have paid $188 million too much for the federal government's
Building the Education Revolution (BER) stimulus program in NSW, the state's auditor-general
says.

Although construction work under the scheme was rapid, building costs were too high
and the wishes of school communities were often ignored, NSW Auditor-General Peter Achterstraat
said.

In 1270 cases the Department of Education had accepted cost estimates from managing
contractors, which were a total of $188 million above department estimates, his latest
financial audit found.

Of the nine schools examined by Mr Achterstraat, eight had costs between two and 40
per cent higher than estimates from an independent quantity surveyor.

"Whilst the Department of Education appears to have achieved its key objective of rapidly
constructing school facilities, costs were higher than business as usual and the preferences
of local communities were not always met," Mr Achterstraat said in a statement.

"Irrespective of time constraints, the department should not approve estimated construction
costs that are substantially higher than the department's own assessments.

"They should investigate significant variances, negotiate with the managing contractors
and set the estimated costs based on their own assessment, not the managing contractor's
assessment."

Parents also questioned whether the BER represented value for money, with just 40 per
cent of 68 schools surveyed by the auditor-general happy with the cost of their projects.

"Parents are asking why did our building cost so much, and why did we get a library
when we wanted a hall," he said.

The auditor-general's damning findings echo earlier investigations of the state's handling
of the contentious BER program.

A NSW upper house inquiry in September found value for money wasn't achieved on some
projects, while a number of schools were lumbered with buildings unfit for their purposes.

A separate, commonwealth-commissioned report, headed by banker Brad Orgill, named NSW
public schools as faring the worst under the BER program after they recorded more than
half the 254 complaints of the entire program and the highest cost per square metre.

NSW education minister Verity Firth defended the state's BER performance, saying the
construction costs referred to in the auditor's report were only estimates and did not
reflect actual costs.

"Once actual construction costs are finalised, we will have a better idea of the program's
final costs," she said in a statement.

"It's important to remember the economic situation the world was facing when the BER began.

"Our estimates are that it will end up between five to ten per cent more than business
as usual, so yes, we paid more than the usual cost.

"But let's be clear - the BER saved jobs, it saved NSW and it saved Australia from recession."

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said alarm bells should have been ringing within
government about the inflated prices being paid to managing contractors.

"The auditor-general's report shows that time and time again, the department accepted
tenders that were between two and 40 per cent in excess of the estimates of those jobs,"

he said.

"No alarm bells rang and as a result taxpayers didn't get value for money."

Vic: Secret witness in murder case named

By Melissa Iaria

MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - A prominent lawyer who has represented gangland figures,
including slain killer Carl Williams, will be the key prosecution witness against a former
Victorian detective charged with murder.

A court suppression was lifted late on Friday allowing Melbourne criminal lawyer Nicola
Gobbo to be named as a prosecution witness in the case of former Victorian drug squad
detective Paul Dale.

Dale is charged with the 2004 murder of police informer Terence Hodson who was shot
dead along with his wife Christine at their Kew home.

Police allege Dale wanted Hodson murdered because he planned to give evidence against
him in a court case.

They have said Ms Gobbo voluntarily made a statement in relation to the murder and
that her evidence is crucial to the case.

She went into hiding after believing she was at high risk.

Ms Gobbo is now suing the Victorian government and Victoria Police for alleged breaches
of duty of care in relation to the deal she made with police to testify.

Ms Gobbo has had close dealings with a number of organised crime figures and her clients
included Williams and Melbourne gangland figure Lewis Moran who was shot dead at a Melbourne
hotel in 2004.

NT: Sex abuse prosecutions from NT intverention limited: NLC

AAP General News (Australia)

NT: Sex abuse prosecutions from NT intverention limited: NLC
GARMA NLC (PIX AVAILABLE)

EAST ARNHEM LAND, NT, Aug 8 AAP - The number of sexual abuse prosecutions since the
Northern Territory intervention has been less than expected and many involve people outside
communities under government control, the Northern Land Council (NLC) says.

NLC director Kim Hill has dismissed some of the effects of the intervention and branded
it a political stunt by the previous Howard government.

He made the off-hand statements when asked at the last-minute to deliver a keynote
address at this year's Garma Festival of Traditional Culture at Gulkula in East Arnhem
Land.

Australian of the Year Mick Dodson was originally scheduled to speak but has fallen
ill and may make an appearance before the festival concludes on Tuesday.

The five-day event has attracted more than 2,000 Yolngu people of the region and visitors
from around Australia and the world.

The former Howard government implemented the intervention in 2007 following reports
of rampant child sexual abuse, alcoholism and drug abuse in remote Aboriginal communities
in the Northern Territory.

The Rudd government has continued the NT intervention plan.

Measures taken included quarantining government payments to individuals, and a crackdown
on a number of illegal behaviours.

Mr Hill said a number of commentators who speak on the intervention do not have first-hand
experience.

"With the intervention, there are a number of Aboriginal speakers throughout this country
who tend to speak on behalf of those living in the Northern Territory who don't necessarily
live by the intervention in the sense of being income-managed or being branded as an indigenous
male who sexually abuses their children," Mr Hill told the audience.

He also said that numbers to date cannot confirm the effectiveness of the intervention
in relation to sex abuse or the origins of the problem.

"My understanding is that ... there's only been 26 prosecutions in regards to sexual-related
matters in the Northern Territory and not all of those 26, since the intervention (has)
been here, are actually Aboriginal people," he said.

"A lot of them aren't being caught or found to be residing in our communities, under
the proscribed communities as demonstrated in the Northern Territory emergency response."

Since the intervention, it is becoming clearer that the Howard government's plan was
aimed more at protecting its own interests, Mr Hill said.

"I think, no doubt, after two-and-a-half years, a number of facts are surfacing that
the whole intervention was really a political stunt for the Howard government to get a
bounce in the polls," Mr Hill said.

NSW: Catholic Church to pay "significant amount" for Youth Day

SYDNEY, April 21 AAP - NSW Premier Morris Iemma says the Catholic Church will foot
much of the bill for its World Youth Day event in Sydney.

Mr Iemma today confirmed that NSW taxpayers would contribute $86 million towards the
staging of the July event, which includes a papal visit to Sydney, with much of the money
to be spent on policing, traffic management, security and other crowd-related issues.

"The Catholic Church is paying for a significant amount of the costs," Mr Iemma told
reporters in Sydney today.

"What we are doing with policing and transport, these are the arrangements that have
to be put in place for massive events."

Mr Iemma said World Youth Day would attract pilgrims from across the world and from
all over Australia, showcasing the city to a global audience while also generating $150
million in revenue.

"It's a huge event and it will bring many benefits to the city," he said.

"Also (the revenue estimate) doesn't include the impact on our tourism industry ...

in much the same way the Commonwealth Games (in Melbourne in 2006) had a net benefit to
Victoria," Mr Iemma said.

No figures were available on the overall cost or the Catholic Church's contribution.

leaders.

"We've also decided today that we will be including indigenous affairs in that agenda
as well," the prime minister told reporters in Canberra.

"We believe these are critical areas of great interest and relevance to Australian families."

Mr Rudd said Health Minister Nicola Roxon was working hard to come up with solutions
to the long elective surgery waiting lists with her state and territory counterparts.

"We are looking particularly at achieving early results on the question of elective

Fed: Alcohol abuse increasing, new figures show.

AAP General News (Australia)

Fed: Alcohol abuse increasing, new figures show.

By Jane Bunce

CANBERRA, Aug 25 AAP - High risk drinking is on the rise and women are picking up the
habit at the fastest rate, new figures show.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) says about one in eight adults - about two
million Australians - drink at a risky or high risk level in a typical week.

And the proportion putting their health at risk has increased over the past decade
from 8.2 per cent in 1995 to 10.8 per cent in 2001 and 13.4 per cent in the most recent
2004-2005 survey.

Men are still more likely to be hitting the bottle hard, but the ABS found the number
of women overindulging doubled in the past decade.

Taxpayers are picking up the tab for the boozy behaviour, with the number of hospital
admissions for alcohol-related mental and behavioural disorders increasing from 23,000
a year in 1999 to 35,000 today.

About 1.5 per cent of men and 2.4 per cent of women injure themselves each year while
under the influence of alcohol.

A Queensland study earlier this year confirmed people who drink alcohol are up to four
times more likely than non-drinkers to be hurt from physical injuries.

More than 30,000 Australians died from alcohol-caused disease and injury between 1992 and 2001.

Middle aged men were most likely to habitually drink too much - with almost one in
five men aged 45 to 54 considered long term risky drinkers - while young men aged 18 to
24 were the most common binge drinkers.

According to National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines, men who drink
11 or more drinks in one sitting are considered to be binge drinking, while seven drinks
puts women in the danger zone.

Long term risky drinking means five or more drinks a day for men and three or more
for women, while high risk drinking means more than seven or five respectively.

Almost half of Australian men, and three in ten women, reported binge drinking at least
once a year and 12 per cent of men reported doing so at least once a week.

One quarter of teenagers aged 14 to 19 reported drinking alcohol daily or weekly.

The figures found alcohol abuse was worse in regional Australia compared to major cities,
and was worse among Australian-born citizens than migrants.

Australians born in North Africa and the Middle East had the lowest proportion of alcohol
abusers, at just 2.2 per cent, compared to 15 per cent of those born locally.

High risk drinkers were more likely to smoke, eat less than the recommended daily fruit
intake and report high or very high levels of psychological distress.

Distress was most common among women aged 18 to 24 years than other groups.

Charleston, W.Va., Area Retailers Blame Piracy, Economy for Drop in CD Sales.

By Paul Wilson, The Charleston Gazette, W.Va. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Mar. 4--When Fred Tyson opened Underground Connection in downtown Charleston in 1999, he never imagined he'd phase out music sales.

Four years later, that's exactly what he plans to do, to focus on selling hairstyling and hair products as early as next month.

"At first, music sales were 100 percent, then 80 percent, then 20 percent of our business," Tyson said. "I never thought I'd do this, but our main goal is to supply a demand."

U.S. customers spent 6.7 percent less on compact discs in 2002 than in 2001, according to figures released last week by the Recording Industry Association of America, the U.S. recording industry's trade group. Sales in 2001 were down 2.3 percent from 2000.

"A major cause of the decline in 2002 includes the ongoing problems of online and physical music piracy," said Hilary Rosen, RIAA chairman and CEO.

Rosen referred to illegal Internet music downloads and the growing number of music fans who use CD burners to copy albums. Representatives of Charleston retailers agree such methods are cutting into sales, but disagree as to whether it's the primary reason.

Priscilla Pope, who has owned Budget Tapes & Records in Kanawha City for 31 years, almost fully blames music downloaders, calling them "thieves."

"Burning a CD off the Internet is exactly the same as shoplifting," she said. "It's the same as some kid walking into my store and sticking a CD down his pants and walking out with it."

Pope, like other retailers, said the depressed economy also has kept customers from buying CDs. She said big-box retail stores such as Wal-Mart and Target can sell CDs near cost during economic downturns.

Trying to compete with big retail is part of the reason Tyson plans to stop offering CDs to customers. He said he buys CDs at wholesale for $12.72 each, but can only mark prices up to $15 and compete with larger stores.

After overhead, employee salaries and other costs, Tyson said, "that's no way to make a living."

Bill Moore, assistant manager at Fye in the Kanawha Mall, wasn't quick to blame declining CD sales on pirated music. He pointed to the growing number of tech-savvy people buying DVDs. Albany, N.Y.-based Fye, which has more than 900 U.S. stores, is stocking more DVDs and fewer CDs, Moore said.

"It's the new hot thing," Moore said. "When you can see your favorite movies with a sharper image and with new features, people are going to buy fewer CDs and more DVDs."

Sales of DVD videos rose 23.9 percent in 2002 and 137.5 percent in 2001, RIAA reported.

Moore believes record companies released fewer "blockbuster" albums in 2002, which might have hurt sales. He also said shutting down the music Web site Napster might have affected consumers." On Napster, people could sample songs and come in and say, 'I want to buy that CD,'" Moore said. "The [download] quality was never as good as store-bought CDs."

Customers can buy blank CDs in many music stores and use them to copy music from Internet downloads. "Selling blank CDs is like selling the bullets for them to shoot back at you," Moore said. "I don't think retail can have too big of a fit over it if they're selling the blanks."

Dating back to bootleg-concert recorders, the music industry has dealt with piracy, Moore said. But that's little consolation to Pope.

"When you bought the tape before, at least you were buying it once," she said. "Eventually, there will not be record companies if this does not stop, but the record companies will stop this."

The power of face-to-face encounters between Israelis and Palestinians.

TEL AVIV: One of the most significant events of my life took place in March 2005 in Anata, a Palestinian village north of Jerusalem. It was the first time I participated in a meeting organized by Combatants for Peace, a movement of Israelis and Palestinians leading a non-violent struggle against the Occupation.

What was so significant to me about that meeting was the fact that it was the first time I had experienced a face-to-face encounter with Palestinians who today are my friends and comrades in a cause.

I had met Palestinians prior to this, for example, during my army service in the Occupied Territories (I later refused to serve there) or when I volunteered to help during an olive harvest that had been disrupted by settlers or the Israeli security forces. But these earlier encounters did not feel like a meeting between equals. By contrast, in Anata over six years ago, I experienced an unmediated encounter with Palestinians who were my equals, people who I had previously thought of as suspicious and different. The experience has become my model for the kind of encounter that breaks down stereotypes and promotes dialogue.

Since then I have felt a need to make it possible for other Israelis and Palestinians to experience such encounters. The face-to-face experience between equals is, I deeply believe, the foundation for peace and reconciliation between our peoples.

Since the Arab Spring there has been lots of talk about the opportunities offered by new technologies as a means to encourage the forging of relationships across boundaries - the kind that will transcend a culture of incitement of hatred. But does the Internet really enable such encounters?

A few years ago I was wasting some time playing an online game. My opponent was a person from Sweden, and while playing we communicated through chat. He asked me where I was from, and when I replied "Israel", he wrote: "How many Palestinians have you killed?" He then quickly disconnected, not giving me the opportunity to tell him that I was a peace activist, that I have never been part of such violence and that I had refused to serve in the Occupied Territories.

One of the explanations for road rage is that drivers cannot see the face of the driver next to them, and there are no means for communicating, verbally or otherwise. The Internet carries a similar risk. My Swedish opponent probably wouldn't dream of speaking thus in a face-to-face situation. The Internet encourages short, simple and, at times, aggressive exchanges, as evidenced in the harsh and verbally violent sphere of "talkbacks".

I don't mean to be discouraging. I am anything but reactionary and I believe that the Internet and social networks are nothing less than wonderful. The way in which the new technology enables the spreading of information and the spinning of fine filaments of encounters that become a web of strong associations, is changing our world and the way we think. But to use these new tools in a constructive way, to harness them into positive tools of change, we need to understand the challenges they pose.

Action on the web in general and social networks specifically can be meaningful. We witness the impressive activities of Avaaz.org or MoveOn.org that bring together thousands and millions of web surfers into a meaningful political force. We also see how surfers from around the world can provide spiritual and moral support for brave actions in other countries, such as the Women2Drive initiative in Saudi Arabia.

The Internet effectively overcomes one of the drawbacks of mass media, in that it offers people who thirst for knowledge and have a critical mind an almost limitless democratic sphere to develop a more complex understanding of reality.

Thus the Internet is an optimal place for someone who wants to discover the reality beyond the superficial image of Islam or Judaism as it is often represented in the established media outlets, and they can use the web to research the fascinating and often more moderate aspects of these religions. The Internet is the perfect space to link people together, to brainstorm innovative ways to change reality.

But, as we witnessed in each and every one of the mass events that have been taking place in the recent months - from Manama to Madrid - what really matters is what happens beyond Facebook - on the street. The real test of the movement for change that is bubbling throughout the web is whether each and every one of us then switches off the computer and marches to the town square. When we finally meet face-to-face and raise our voices together to chant, that's when change will happen.

Researchers from Pomona College Provide Details of New Studies and Findings in the Area of Pediatrics.(Report)

"This study explored the interactive effects of dispositional threat orientation, type of message, and having children on reactions to a message about exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) in plastics. The study used a 2 (message: Fear Arousal or Plain)x2 (parenting status: child or no child)x2 (threat orientation: high or low) mixed factorial design," researchers in Claremont, United States report.

"Adults (N = 200) recruited via the Internet completed measures of threat orientations, reported whether they were a parent, and read either a low or high fear-arousal message about the risks of BPA exposure. They then completed measures of reactions to the message (perceived susceptibility to BPA effects, negative emotions, and behavioural intentions to engage in protection). Depending on threat orientations, the fear arousal version of the message and parenthood had strikingly different effects, ranging from no effect (for those high in a control-based approach) to prompting change (for those low in a control-based approach) to counterproductive (for those high in an optimistic denial approach)," wrote S.C. Thompson and colleagues, Pomona College.

The researchers concluded: "That considering individual differences and their interactions with situational factors could improve both the predictive ability of threat protection theories and the delivery of messages intended to change behaviour."

Thompson and colleagues published their study in British Journal of Health Psychology (Reactions to a health threat: Dispositional threat orientations and message characteristics. British Journal of Health Psychology, 2011;16(Part 2):344-358).

New study examines impact of new media on eating habits.

A new study by Rochester Institute of Technology is one of the first to analyze how new-media technology, including the Internet and smartphones, are changing college students' eating habits and their relationship to food. Findings indicate that individuals are more likely to have meals while sitting at the computer than at the kitchen table, and that they use social media as the main avenue to obtain recipe and nutritional information.

"I sought to investigate how the explosion of new media is changing traditional notions of meals and how this is transforming human interaction," notes Madeline Varno, a senior communications major at RIT and principle author of the study. "As opposed to their parents or grandparents, college students do not see meals as a central activity in and of itself, either for enjoyment or communication. In fact none of the respondents I interviewed even had a kitchen table."

Varno conducted an extensive survey of college students at RIT, which assessed how meals were prepared and eaten, how students interacted with others during meals and how they obtained information about nutrition, potential food choices and recipes. It also assessed the importance of meals in students' social lives.

"Eating is now just one of several activities being multitasked at once, all of which generally involve computers and smartphones, including surfing the Web, communicating with friends via Facebook and doing homework," she continues. "This does not mean that students are any less social; in fact, they are often interacting with more people than if they were sitting in a dining room, but the method of that socialization is now directly connected to new media."

Varno also found that people were more likely to ask friends on Facebook or Twitter about recipes than consult a cookbook and often used social media to assess the relevance and validity of food and nutrition information.

"While some respondents expressed concern at the sheer volume of food information available online, they also indicated that the use of Facebook and Twitter to quickly validate data made them feel more informed about making the right choices," Varno adds.

Varno hopes her results will lead to additional studies with larger sample sizes that could further assess how new media is changing eating habits among the broader population.

Knology Announces Closing of Sunflower Acquisition.

WEST POINT, Ga. -- Knology, Inc. (Nasdaq: KNOL) today closed its previously-announced acquisition of Sunflower Broadband ("Sunflower"), a provider of video, voice and data services to residential and business customers in Douglas County, Lawrence, Kansas and the surrounding area for $165 million cash.

In connection with the acquisition, Knology has entered into a $770 million first lien credit facility with proceeds used to partially fund the acquisition purchase price, refinance the company's existing credit facility, and pay related transaction costs. Knology also used approximately $48 million of cash on hand to partially fund the transaction. The new $770 million credit agreement includes a $50 million revolving credit facility, a $175 million term A loan and a $545 million term B loan. The revolving credit facility is not being used in connection with the acquisition or refinancing. The term A loan bears interest at LIBOR plus 4% and has a term of five years with annual amortization of $8.8 million, $8.8 million, $17.5 million and $26.3 million in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively, with the balance due at maturity. The term B loan bears interest at LIBOR plus 4%, with a LIBOR floor of 1.5%, and has a term of six years with 1% principal amortization annually with the balance due at maturity.

"This is an exciting transaction for our company," said Rodger L. Johnson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Knology, Inc. "Sunflower is a very successful, customer-focused business that will expand Knology's footprint and add meaningful scale to our existing operations. We welcome the Sunflower team to Knology and are excited about our future together."

M. Todd Holt, Knology's President and Chief Financial Officer, added, "Sunflower has achieved excellent customer penetration and attractive EBITDA and free cash flow results, and this acquisition complements our continued focus on organic growth, including the high ROI edge-out investments. We were able to successfully access the credit markets to fund the transaction and refinance our debt in a manner that allows us significant flexibility to continue to grow our business and extend our maturities. In addition, we used some cash on the balance sheet to partially fund the transaction in order to maintain manageable leverage and a solid free cash flow profile, while at the same time keeping our liquidity position very strong."

Credit Suisse and SunTrust Robinson Humphrey acted as Joint Lead Arrangers and Joint Book Runners for the credit facility. SunTrust Robinson Humphrey acted as financial advisor to Knology with the respect to the acquisition of Sunflower and RBC Daniels acted as financial advisor to Sunflower.

A Comprehensive Look at Hispanic Offerings From Cable and Satellite Operators

Several operators have been beefing up their Hispanic packages over the past year, with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications, RCN and others all reporting significant growth in the amount of the Spanish- and English-language content available to Hispanic customers.

The following is a rundown of the Hispanic offerings of the top 15 pay TV providers. Channel counts and pricing may vary from system to system. The list also highlights the least expensive, entry-level packages, many of which can be combined with other tiers or much-larger lineups of digital and pay TV channels.

Comcast

Basic subscribers : 23.9 million

Digital subscribers : 17.5 million

High-speed Internet subscribers : 15.3 million

Phone subscribers : 7.0 million

Hispanic packages : "CableLatino" (around 25 Spanish-language channels, limited basic channels, music channels, a digital set-top box and video-on-demand in Spanish for $20 to $30, with typical pricing around $25). MSO has signed deals with about 80 programmers. Systems customize local lineups to reflect their demographics. A variety of more-expensive packages are available, with larger lineups of 50 to 60 Spanish-language channels offered in all-digital systems.

Recent and future moves : Comcast, which was the first cable operator to devote significant resources to the Hispanic market, rolled out lower-cost Hispanic tiers in 2003 and has since revamped offerings and beefed up both linear-channels and free Spanish-language VOD. In the last year, the MSO has dramatically increased its Spanish-language VOD content to about 300 choices, up from 100 a year ago, and continues to add linear channels, most recently adding TuTv's five channels and Mexicanal to some of its systems. As part of an aggressive analog reclamation effort to free up bandwidth, Comcast has launched the larger "Nuevo CableLatino" package with 50 to 60 Spanish-language channels priced at $24.99 in Boston and $29.99 in Chicago, and has plans to soon make that package available to some additional markets, primarily on the West Coast. Bundles specifically targeted to Hispanics have been available since October 2006 and during the last year, Comcast has also beefed up the long-distance calling plans listed above.

DirecTV

Subscribers : 18.3 million

Recent and future moves : In 2007, the company relaunched its Hispanic offering "DirecTV Más" with a new name and revamped channel lineup. The package now includes seven exclusive channels and programming from every Spanish-speaking country in Latin America, as well as Spain. DirecTV has been aggressively using such celebrities as Oscar de la Hoya and Andres Garcia to promote the service and in 2008 was a top-five advertiser in U.S. Spanish-language media. Besides the current discounts for Óptimo Más, DirecTV is running promotions for its other packages: "Óptimo Más plus DVR" (150 English and Spanish channels and the DVR service for $34.99 for the first 12 months); "Más Ultra" (170 channels in English and Spanish for $39.99 for the first 12 months); and "Lo Máximo" (more than 275 channels and all premium-movie channels for $59.99 for the first five months.) In terms of new programming, the satellite provider continues to look for high-quality, exclusive Spanish-language content.

Dish Network

Subscribers : 13.6 million

Major Hispanic markets : National footprint; offers local broadcast stations in most markets.

Recent and future moves: Satellite-TV company Dish was the first provider to seriously target the Hispanic market, viewing the effort as a way to distinguish itself from DirecTV and cable. Despite increased competition, it remains the market leader. Over the last year, the satellite provider has continued to add new channels to its various Hispanic packages, including such services as Bandamax, CBeebies, Pasiones and TeleAmazonas and is planning to add more Spanish-language services this year. In November of 2008, it launched a new entry-level package, DishMexico, and is currently offering $10 off its other Hispanic tiers, promoting "DishLatino Plus" (more than 110 Spanish and English services) at the discounted price of $24.99 for the first 12 months; "DishLatino Dos" (for more than 200 channels) for $32.99; and "DishLatino Max" (more than 230 channels) for $42.99 in the first year. In the summer of 2005, TWC launched a rebranded "Nuestra Tele" package, which was subsequently launched in divisions that serve its largest Hispanic markets. Lineups, pricing and brands vary by system but its main Hispanic package is now El Paquetazo. First launched in 2008 in Los Angeles, with a greatly expanded number of Spanish and English channels, the El Paquetazo was launched in May of 2009 in New York systems with around 40 Spanish-language services and over 80 English language channels for $34.95. In September, El Paquetazo will launch in Texas, making it available in the MSO's top three Hispanic markets. Besides the larger channel lineup in El Paquetazo, the MSO is planning to add more Spanish-language VOD by the end of the year. Atlanta-based Cox also offers a variety of bundles and calling plans, including the "Simply Worldwide" plan for $1.99 a month that has low rates to 14 Latin American countries.

Major Hispanic markets : Include Arizona, Southern California and Las Vegas.

Recent and future moves : As part of a completely revamped Hispanic strategy, Cox launched the Paquete Latino package and a Spanish-language Web site in 2004. As a result of its Hispanic push, the MSO's Hispanic customers now make up a higher proportion of its customers than they do of the general population, with bundled services proving to be particularly attractive -- more than 67% of Cox's Hispanic customers now take two or more services. While the MSO has no immediate plans to add more linear Spanish-language services, it increased the amount of Spanish-language on demand programming by about 50% in the last year and plans to add significantly more VOD content over the next year. Wandering WiFi Provides Ardent Health With Secure Wi-Fi for Patients.

ATLANTA -- Wandering WiFi, a leader in providing secure public and private wireless technology solutions, announced today that Ardent Health Services has successfully gone live with Wandering WiFi's wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) service in six hospitals located in Oklahoma and New Mexico. Ardent is offering free Wi-Fi Internet access for all its patients and visitors.

"Free Wi-Fi service sets us a part from our competition. Patients and visitors want to stay in touch, and Wandering WiFi offers us a secure way of delivering that service within HIPAA guidelines," said Kevin Gwin, vice president of communications for Ardent Health Services. "Hospitals are becoming more like nice hotels, and this service adds value and a higher level of comfort. The response has been amazing. Once we launched, reactions were immediate and extremely positive."

Wandering WiFi's product portfolio includes HotSpot solutions and AirWatch, a wireless network and mobile device management platform. The HotSpot solutions offer Ardent and other businesses the opportunity for customized branding, usage controls, bandwidth management content filtering and reduced legal liability by forcing acceptance of terms and conditions. Wandering WiFi also offers superior security and technical support with instant VPN access and 24/7/365 system monitoring.

"HIPAA regulations require that healthcare facilities make privacy and security a top priority, and Wandering WiFi is pleased to offer Ardent a solution that provides its customers a valuable service without compromising patient privacy," said John Marshall, CEO of Wandering WiFi. "We partnered with Ardent to segregate their existing wireless infrastructure and rapidly deploy a cost-effective solution. Internal IT staff did not have the bandwidth to support visiting doctors, patients and guests, so our primary focus was to increase customer service while taking the burden off Ardent's team."
